ICEHOTEL

ICEHOTEL is situated in the village Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The heart and backbone is the River Torne flowing freely through the unspoilt wilderness. Covered with a meter thick ice layer winter time the river is the source of all our art, architecture and design. The pure water and the steady movement of the river create the clearest ice possible.
It started off with an Igloo and developed to ICEHOTEL with guests visiting from all over the world. Learn the story of the dream come true – ICEHOTEL!
Winter season at ICEHOTEL is 10 December 2010 to 16 April 2011.
FROM THE ICE AGE TO THE PRESENT

Ten thousand years ago, glaciers carved a riverbed and the Torne River was born. Since then, the crystal-clear, pure water of the Torne River has flowed freely along its 600-kilometer path through Lapland out to the sea in the southeast. The Torne River is the artery of ICEHOTEL. Its water has been running past Jukkasjärvi since the beginning of time. The free flowing river offers unlimited opportunities for adventures and experiences. Join us, and be amazed by one of the last true wilderness regions of Europe.
The water of free flowing Torne River is among the purest in Europe. In summer time this is a whirling world of opportunities, and during the arctic winter the frozen water forms the foundation for a fairy world of ice. The seasonal changes of the Torne River provide the yearly rhythm for people living nearby.
The entire ICEHOTEL is on loan from the mighty Torne River and is a place where time stands still. Just a short period before, fish swam in the water and the river was a crashing torrent of white-water, wild and frothing. And very soon, when the spring comes and then finally the summer, the rooms, the suites, the bar, the reception, in fact the entire creation will once again become part of the rushing rapids coursing toward the sea.
ICEHOTEL’S SPECIAL ART

Experience the art from ICEHOTEL and meet the people who realized their creative ideas by chiselling them out of snow and ice. When summer comes, all that
is left areour memories and the photographs. While waiting for the hotel to be re-built, with all new art and design, let the artwork from previous years inspire you.
JUKKASJARVI

Jukkasjärvi is a small village 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. It is no coincidence that the name Jukkasjärvi means meeting place in the Sami language. For half a millennium has this location, by the shores of the Torne River, been a gathering place for people.
Through times has Sami, Finnish and Swedish tradition formed culture in Jukkasjärvi. The present day atmosphere is unique. The surrounding wilderness adds a rare quality and reminds us of the order of things – the power of nature and the smallness of man.
