HISTORICAL PLACE
Today, with 48 rooms and 11 suites, the Albatroz Hotel has kept the architectural trace and the natural beauty of the 3 different buildings that compose it, along with the comfort
of a modern and luxury hotel.
The Main Building (Duke of Loulé’s Palace)
Acquired by the Albatroz group in 1982, and after an 18 month period of works of remodeling and extension of previous installations, the Palace of the Dukes of Loulé,
then known as “Almond Box”, was built in 1873 and was home of several families until the ‘60s, when it opened its doors to Tourism, with the name of Albatroz Inn. At that
time, it had 11 rooms, one dining room, a bar and a nice lawn, replaced by a pool some years later.
The Palace Building (House of D. António of Lancastre)
The Albatroz Palace (across the street), was bought in the year 2000. At first named House of D. António of Lancastre (the first owner); this house was built in the XX
century and keeps its architectural Italian style. Also known as “the house of the yellow ceilings”, it has a beautiful balcony with arches and columns facing the sea.
The Yellow Building (“Asse das Três” House)
With the acquisition of this Yellow House next door in 2003, the Hotel extended once again its number of rooms and meeting rooms. Originally called “Asse das Três”, it was built in the foreland of the same name, in 1922, by D. Nuno Miguel d’Almada e Lancastre. D. Nuno didn’t have children, so the house was donated to his godson Bernardo Manuel Pinheiro Espírito Santo Silva. The House belonged to the Espírito Santo family until the year 2000, when it was sold to some foreigners and then (in 2002) to the Albatroz Hotel (Group).
The White Building
Bought in 2004 and launched in the summer of 2005, the White House was the most recent acquisition of the Group. Keeping the façade of a real beach “Chalet”, the house
was perfectly integrated with the other historical buildings. The natural solarium and the lawn were enlarged allowing even better panoramic views, especially from the suite
(duplex) on the top floor of the building.

CASCAIS
The village of Cascais is situated between the Sintra ridge and the Atlantic Ocean. On the second half of the 12th century, Cascais was just a small fishermen’s village. It
was usual to say that the name of Cascais came from the plural of “cascal” (shells in heaps), which was related to the thousands of shells from the shell-fishes found in that
area.
In 1364, King D. Pedro I granted Cascais the Municipality charter, although it was only made effective in 1370. When the discoveries began, Cascais became Lisbon’s sentinel and it was also the first Portuguese land to be sighted by the navigators when they came back from their long sea adventures. For this very reason, Cascais was one of the first places to have a lighthouse (where now Farol da Guia stands) during the kingdom of D. Manuel I (16th century). In 1859, with the construction of the main roads that connected it to the villages of Oeiras
and Sintra, Cascais started to recover from the stagnancy in which it had been. In 1870, the royal family already took their swimming in the beautiful beaches, which made them
the best ones in Portugal and originated the boom of Tourism. Finally, under the supervision of Fausto Figueiredo and his partner Augusto Carreira de Sousa, the Estoril project began as a centre of tourist international ambitions. But it was only after the First World War (1916) that the construction of the Casino started. After a period of intense constructions, helped by the evolution of the roads, Cascais became one of the most famous Tourist Centers, lodging during and after the Second World War groups of refugees and exiled, such as the Counts of Barcelona, King Humbert II of Italy, Carol II of Romenia and many other personalities from the cultural and sportive panorama.
Now a day, Cascais is still a reference in Portugal’s Tourism, always trying to catch up to the most exigent guests and their quality criteria.
This fishing village of Cascais has an area of 2 007 acres and approximately 35 000 inhabitants. Although fishing is no longer its main industry, it still keeps all the traditions.
Day in day out, one can watch the interesting show of the fishermen’s arrival and subsequent auctioning of fish at the “lota“ (lot). A no less interesting show is the pleasant
market, on Wednesday mornings.
THE SUBURBS
ESTORIL
A mere 100 meters from Cascais, Estoril has many tourist and seaside resort traditions. Its architecture is well balanced with a variety of elegant palaces and gardens and it has always been sought by the Portuguese and foreign tourist alike. The Casino and its broad gardens are a must for any visitor. Also, the stroll along the jagged wall, which links Cascais to
Estoril, is very pleasant.
SINTRA: The distance from Cascais is around 12 km. At such a short distance, one can admire a totally different scenery from that of the Coast and the picturesque village of Sintra, the very heart of the luxuriant mountain (that bears the same name). The reasons for a visit to this region are innumerable, they range from the Palace to the various monuments and
castles of the “Serra de Sintra“, from the flowery gardens to the extensive wood, with more than 3 000 species of plants, or from the outdoor walking to the enchanting landscape.
QUELUZ: Built in the 18th century, in the Versailles Palace style, the Palace of Queluz used to be a Royal summer residence. The fascinating beauty of its architecture, the interiors and surrounding gardens, allied to the good Portuguese cuisine of the Palace restaurant are well worth a visit.
CABO DA ROCA: : Located at 23 km from Cascais, it is the most western point of Europe or, as our poet Luís de Camões wrote, “Where the land ends and the sea begins“. The lighthouse was built in 1772.
.ARRABIDA: 50 kilometers away from Cascais, south of the River Tejo, Arrábida offers a picturesque view of both sea and mountains. On one side we have the clear calm waters of the bay and on the other the dramatic Serra da Arrábida.
SESIMBRA: About 50 kilometers south of the River Tejo, Sesimbra is a fishing village of many traditions. Don’t miss the Ruins of the Moorish Castle which rise above the village.
There are also lots of nice Restaurants specialized in Regional dishes.
